The Escazú PreCOP, previous to COP3, will take place on April 19 and 20 in Santiago, Chile. Organizations, experts and civil society are convened to participate in this key event that seeks to promote environmental action and citizen participation.

The crucial prelude to the third meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Escazu Agreement (COP3) is about to begin with the Escazu PreCOP, a two-day event to be held on April 19 and 20, 2024, from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm, at the Centro Cultural de España, Santiago, Chile, and organized by the NGOs FIMA and CEUS Chile.

This encounter is presented as a unique platform for leaders, experts, authorities, communities and organizations committed to promoting environmental action and citizen participation. Its main objective is to strengthen international collaboration and create alliances that promote the implementation of the Escazú Agreement.

Several crucial topics for environmental action and citizen participation will be addressed. From the gender perspective to the governance of the Escazú Agreement, including the relationship with climate change, the protection of First Nations and vulnerable groups, capacity building for climate justice, and just transition. In addition, we will explore the fundamental pillars of the Agreement, concrete examples of its implementation, and discuss the tools needed to ensure a safe environment for environmental defenders, also highlighting the crucial role of the public in the effective implementation of the Escazú Agreement.

The event will feature a variety of activities, including exhibition talks, panel discussions, interactive workshops, artistic activities and networking spaces.

Open Invitation

Civil society organizations, environmental defenders, youth groups, women, farmers, academics, authorities and the public interested in environmental issues are invited to apply for any activity, whether it be seminars, talks or workshops.

To be considered, activities must have a maximum duration of 50 minutes and address topics related to the Escazú Agreement, the protection and defense of nature, the promotion of human rights, including environmental human rights, and/or environmental democracy. In addition, aspects such as gender parity, the participation of speakers from different territories and sectors, the inclusion of Native Communities and vulnerable groups, as well as the participation of environmental defenders will be valued.

Applications will be open until March 5 at 11:59 p.m. Chilean time and the program of events will be communicated to each applicant’s e-mail address by March 15, 2024.
